My very first IHSA coaching job was at University High (Normal, IL) as the JV coach, where I had the honor of coaching several future IHSA State Champions. U-High was a great experience for me and it taught me a lot about building team culture and a winning attitude.

One of the players on my JV team was a young Freshman named Amy (Gannoway) Champ. She loved the game, was a hard-worker, and extremely coachable. Even though I left U-High to coach at another school, our paths crossed again when her younger brother Tony played on my Boy's club team and later Amy herself joined my club to wrap up her playing career. She got several offers to continue playing at the next level but for Amy it was all about ending on a high note and playing for herself. 

Amy is now the Head Coach at Metcalf Jr High where she has guided her team to a State berth this season. At the Quarter-Finals game in Auburn, IL I got to watch her coach her team to a 2-1 victory and congratulate her after the game on her success. 

Seeing former players pursue their own coaching dreams makes me grateful and humbled to have been part of their Volleyball journey, and reminds me of why I still run my own Volleyball club. Congratulations to Amy and the Metcalf Wildcats and good luck to everyone at State this year!
